DragonWave’s Pseudowire products provide significant advantages over native TDM for mixed traffic applications. A Pseudowire approach offers greater efficiency, delivering up to 25 percent more T1/E1s per RF channel than the equivalent SONET/SDH approach, resulting in lower cost per T1/E1. Other benefits include:
- True network convergence – avoids the need to manage the TDM connections at each intermediate network point;
- Simplified operations and management – only one packet based network needs to be operated;
- Future proofing – the network does not need to be changed as the traffic mix changes from TDM circuits to packet based traffic; and
- Lower capital cost – the pass thru economics at the intermediate site and the virtual aggregation function of the DS3/OC3 units eliminates the need for distributed Add/Drop/Mux (ADM) or cross-connect boxes, taking cost out of the network.
SDU
DragonWave’s Service Delivery Unit (SDU) provides a convenient, compact termination point for mixed TDM and Ethernet service. It combines Ethernet, up to 6 switched GbE ports (2 optical and 4 electrical) as well as Pseudowire functionality into a single box. There are three SDU options available: 16 port T1/E1 version, 2 port DS3 version and an OC3/STM1 version. Up to three SDUs can be put into a single Rack Unit (1RU) high slot and cascaded to provide as many ports as required. DragonWave’s SDU offers a solution to provide high capacity TDM transport and high capacity carrier Ethernet traffic over a single converged packet based network.
Features Include:
- 16XT1/E1, 2xDS3, OC3/STM1 Ports,1RU High
- Point-Point and Multi-Point Configurations;
- User Settable efficiency/Delay;
- User Settable Jitter Buffer;
- Timing over Packet (AT&T TR-62411 & G.823 Jitter and Wander);
- Remotely network manageable via CLI, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 or web management;
- IETF PWE3, MEF circuit emulation compliant;
- Transparent T1/E1 line extension over Ethernet (TDMoE);
- Integrated Ethernet switch combines IP user payload and TDMoE channels with priority;
- 4x 100/1000BaseT Ethernet ports + 2XOptical/Copper GigE Ports;

APX
The APX Service Adaptation, APX-104E/108E, delivers a standards-compliant 4/8 x T1/E1 port extension capability to the AirPair and Horizon Ethernet platform. DragonWave’s APX product seamlessly transports TDM traffic over Ethernet enabling customers to easily migrate to native IP networks while still supporting legacy TDM services, and meeting stringent synchronization requirements.
