High Capacity WISP TowerStream
Success Story:
AirPair provides high capacity, high availability backhaul for TowerStream’s multi-point systems, and high-speed access links for TowerStream’s large bandwidth customers.
Business Challenge:
TowerStream has been deploying multi-point systems to provide broadband access of a few Mbps to end users. This end-user traffic in turn has driven a requirement for high capacity, native Ethernet, backhaul that provides scaleable and reliable bandwidth between the multi-point sites and TowerStream’s Backbone facility within a city. Leased facilities are expensive for this high capacity, typically TDM-based, often unreliable, and take a long time to get deployed.
In addition to this backhaul requirement, TowerStream has had a service requirement to address medium to large building with high bandwidth connectivity, typically 10 Mbps full duplex and above. Not only is it important for this service to be highly available, it is vital to be able to quickly deploy to a new customer site.
Solution:
TowerStream deployed the AirPair 50 and AirPair 100 as a backhaul solution to provide high capacity connectivity from the multi-point sites. The AirPair solution provided native Ethernet backhaul with <.5ms, enabling a wide range of services including Voice and Video over IP. In addition, TowerStream deploys the licensed AirPair for links >5 km/ 3 mi, and deploys the 24 GHz unlicensed band for < 5 km/ 3mi deployments, both ensuring service reliability.
For the High-Speed business customer requirement, TowerStream deployed AirPair Flex, allowing them to tailor the bandwidth of the system to the end customer requirement. As a customer increases bandwidth, TowerStream can increase the AirPair throughput up to 200 Mbps via remote software commands. This has allowed TowerStream to efficiently scale their CAPEX to service revenue, rather than requiring a large day one investment for scalability.

Guaranteed Performance: By utilizing licensed spectrum, AirPair Flex ensured TowerStream could still guarantee 100% packet deliver with a sub-millisecond port-to-port latency.
