    Municipal Wireless Solutions Case Study

    Success Story:

DragonWave’s AirPair Licensed Ethernet radio solution for high capacity and high availability backhaul enables next-generation municipal fixed and mobile wireless infrastructure.

    Business Challenge:

Municipalities are facing increased demands on legacy mobile infrastructures, driving the requirement for high speed mobile networks for Police Departments, Fire Departments, and converged municipality networks for improved services, billing and monitoring. In addition, there is a growing requirement for increased surveillance, and increased bandwidth between municipal offices.

These emerging demands on the edge of the municipal network are driving many important requirements on the municipal core. First and foremost is the increased bandwidth required to address the myriad of applications. Additionally, low latency is extremely important to deliver voice and video services. Network availability and guaranteed bandwidth are absolute requirements for emergency services. In addition, future scalability to enable new services, and additional departments to leverage existing infrastructure is important. Lastly, the ability to separate traffic and prioritize traffic between departments is very important.

    Solution:

The AirPair native Ethernet solution is designed to address the emerging municipality requirements, with 200 Mbps Committed Information Rate (CIR) full duplex capacity, and 100/1000BaseT interfaces AirPair can connect mobile access points, city offices, and base stations with distances up to 50 Km/31 Mi. The AirPair solution also provides low initial cost using AirPair Flex with remote scalability from 10 Mbps to 200 Mbps.

In addition to capacity, AirPair addresses the reliability requirements of the emergency services departments through its licensed mesh architecture. The AirPair solution can be deployed in the licensed bands to eliminate interference, providing a guaranteed high availability backbone network, which can be further hardened using its mesh protection capabilities, with 50 msec recovery time. 802.1p enables multiple departments to share the network, while being able to guarantee bandwidth to high priority traffic such as emergency services. In addition AirPair provides native Ethernet backhaul with <.5ms latency, enabling a wide range of services including Voice and Video over IP.

This new architecture delivers several advantages:

Backhaul Performance: Interference-free using licensed or the newly unlicensed 24 GHz band, eliminating costly downtime. This can be further hardened with 50 ms switching using the AirPair mesh configuration. This enables municipalities to realize 5-9s availability, which is critical for emergency services.

Measurable ROI: Cost effective backbone alternative to costly leased lines or fiber installations.

New Service Set: By using an AirPair solution, municipalities have a native Ethernet platform optimized for future services such as Voice over IP, while still enabling TDM services. In addition, each department’s network can be prioritized separately using 802.1p.

Increase Capacity for Future Growth: By using the AirPair solution, municipalities can rapidly grow and expand there network up to 200 Mbps without any hardware changes.
