Giving Cell Site Routers A Spin
The last time I leased a car they gave me the choice of all-wheel drive or conventional rear-wheel powertrain. The salesman offered up the pros and cons of all-wheel drive: the car guzzled more gas; its ride was harder than a tractor; and it didn’t like the sports sedan it was supposed to be. On the other hand, he conceded, I would be able to get out and about when it snowed.
Carriers face a similar choice when it comes to cell site routers. These devices, according to their supporters, do two things really well: they aggregate traffic types and provide demarcation within the network. They are, as envisioned by router makers like Cisco and Juniper, all-powerful traffic cops that incorporate the best of the vendors’ router capabilities and add on some more specific options into the package.....
